Drug resistance is a phenomenon caused when the bacteria or fungi or any other disease-causing microorganism grows tolerant to the drugs that are taken to control them or eliminate them from your system. Such drug-resistant microorganisms are called superbugs. They usually get used to the drugs and adapt to the environment. This results in ineffective treatment and persistence of infections and diseases.

Today it has grown into an alarming concern. Constant intake of heavy dosages of drugs has made most of the microorganisms Drug-Resistant. Some of these cause the most deadly diseases that we have been trying to control for ages. Want to know what they are? Have a look.

Tuberculosis (TB)

In 2014, WHO has estimated that there were about 480,000 new cases of severe tuberculosis that were resistant to multiple drugs. Especially to the 2 most powerful anti-TB drugs. Although only about one-fourth of these came into light. This case of Tuberculosis was named Multi-Drug Resistant Tuberculosis or MDR-TB. Moreover, only half of these MDR-TB patients were successfully treated.

Moreover, another sensitive case of TB called Extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB), has also been identified in 105 countries. In this case, the bacteria are resistant to at least 4 of the most effective anti-TB drugs. It has also been estimated that about ten percent of MDR-TB patients are suffering from XDR-TB.

Malaria

As per a WHO report from Mid 2016, P. falciparum that causes malaria has been confirmed to develop drug resistance to ACT  in Cambodia, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Myanmar, Thailand, and Viet Nam. In most of these places, patients were able to recover fully after they were treated with ACT along with an effective partner drug.

However, this microbe has developed a complete resistance to a majority of antimalarial medicines, along the Cambodia-Thailand border, making its treatment even more difficult and challenging.

Some Others

These were the two most vital cases. Apart from these, WHO has also reported cases of drug resistance in patients suffering from Influenza, HIV, pneumonia, E.coli, etc. Although the number of cases was comparatively less, they have turned out to meet tragic ends.

Moreover, if these disease-resistant strains start spreading all over the world, it can be said that the apocalypse is in our near future. We have already seen the effects of the pandemic COVID-19. Let’s wish that these strains are contained before they find their way all over the world.

How To Stop It?

Well, WHO has been helping the affected countries with all the technical assistance that it can provide. This will help these countries in bringing new amendments in their national policy for a secured health system and constant surveillance. It has also suggested them to use natural treatment methods and natural products to the utmost extent possible.

However, that is not it. Drug resistance has become a common problem for most societies around the world. Isolating specific regions would not solve the problem as these diseases have already become prevalent in these specific regions. So, there is also a need for coordination at a global level to reduce the use of drugs and go in for a natural healing process. Although this takes a lot of time, this will help in reducing the spread of the Drug-Resistant strain all around the world.
